NIN stands for National Identification Number. It is a unique number containing eleven (11) characters, issued by the National Identity Management Commission to Nigerian citizens and legal residents. The National Identification Number is issued for identification purpose and comes in a plastic ID or paper ID. The NIN helps to verify that the basic personal information provided is accurate and consistent. Every number is unique in the sense that once it has been assigned to one person, it cannot be reassigned to anybody else, ever. The NIN is a confidential document that can be exploited for fraudulent activities if it falls into the wrong hands. To be eligible for the National Identification Number, you must be at least sixteen (16) years old. In this article, we look at how to register for NIN

- Fill out the pre-enrollment form
- Submit the form and wait for the authorities to cross-check it with the supporting documents you provided
- While you wait, the enrollment officer will input all provided information into the NIMC database
- You are to cross-check all information on the database using the applicant monitor (this is to ensure that there are no errors)
- If satisfied with the information on the database, the enrollment officer will proceed to capture your biometrics. This involves your ten fingerprints as well as your facial image.
- After you successfully complete the enrollment process, you will receive a transaction ID slip, which you will present to the enrollment officer to collect your NIN on the due date
- The officer will request you to return after about five (5) working days for your NIN to be processed. During this time frame, they will conduct further verification
- After processing, applicant returns to the enrollment center for collection of a NIN slip

Types of Enrollment
There are three types of NIN enrollment, they are:
- Self Service: This is a “walk in and do it yourself” enrolment process where an applicant walks into an Enrolment Centre and fills out an Enrolment Form (hard copy). The applicant then hands the completed form to the Enrolment Officer, who captures the applicant’s biometric data and processes the information on the form.
- Assisted Service: This is a “walk in and get assistance from a Support Officer” method of enrolment. The applicant follows the same steps as in the Self Service method, but instead of filling out the Enrolment Form on their own, they walk into the Enrolment Centre for assistance. A Support Officer guides the applicant in correctly filling out the Enrolment Form with the required information.
- Mobile Service: To enroll for the NIN using the Mobile-Service process, applicants go to any Mobile Enrolment Station in their neighborhood at any time. They can either request an Enrolment Form and fill it out themselves or ask the Support Officer for assistance. This method is valid and complete once the Enrolment Officer at the station captures the applicant’s biometric data and processes the data from the filled Enrolment Form.
